A glimpse of Varenna, a poetic village reflecting on the lake in Italy

Varenna is a beautiful little village in the province of Lecco, in the vast Lombardy region of northern Italy. The village is located on the east bank of Lake Como, one of the largest and most spectacular lakes in the "boot-shaped country". If you consider the shape of Lake Como as an inverted Y, Varenna lies on a branch of this Y. Photo: Robertharding.

Varenna has a beautiful view of Lake Como. According to legend, the village was founded around the 12th century, when the Comacina islanders in this vast lake came here. Because of war, their houses were destroyed, they had to evacuate and settle in a new land. Photo: Varenna Villa.

One of Varenna's features is the row of brightly colored pastel houses that sit on the lakeside mountainside, defying the laws of physics. These colorful houses give Varenna a lively appearance, attracting visitors from all over to check-in. Photo: Home To Go.

As night falls, the scene of pastel houses in Varenna becomes even more impressive by thousands of shimmering lights, reflected on the surface of the magical Lake Como. Photo: DeviantArt.

The Walk of Lovers is a striking red fenced romantic walk in Varenna that begins at the pier and leads along the lakeside. This place is considered as one of the most valuable experiences for visitors when coming to the beautiful village reflecting on Lake Como. Photo: Brutally Honest.

Chiesa di San Giorgio is Varenna's main church, dating back to the 14th century. The area in front of the church is also the village square. Opposite Chiesa di San Giorgio is the smaller, but older, church of Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista. Visitors can admire the beautiful frescoes in these churches. Photo: Ainsley Black.

Standing on a high hill with sweeping views of Lake Como for centuries, Castello di Vezio has been a military fortress since the Middle Ages. Castello di Vezio is now a regular venue for falconry shows. The castle also has many "ghosts" of plaster that can make you… startled. Photo: Steve Demeranville.

Coming to Varenna, visitors should not miss the opportunity to visit Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi, famous villas with charming beauty here. In addition to remarkable architectural lines and interior spaces, Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi also have lovely, elaborately designed gardens. Photo: The Joyce Collective, Resegone, Travel Garden Landscape.
